THE CHIESA DI SAN LEONARDO (CHURCH OF ST. LEONARD), Piazza San Leonardo - Treviso |
|
Some centuries ago in Treviso there was a Hospital,
called "Ospedale di San Leonardo" (Hospital of St. Leonard), which became a church maintaining the same name after. The first written demonstration
of its being dates back to 1330. |
|
|
Today there is nothing of original church, it was
raised again in 1657 and then it was modified some times: the inside of the church was rebuilt in the beginning
of 19th century by a Francesco Zambon’s design and the eighteenth-century façade was done again by the
architect Luigi Candiani (about 1930). The main side was adorned by a significant fresco representing
"St. Leonard and the prisoners" by Alessandro Lepsky, unfortunately this fresco is not visible today.
In 1811 the Chiesa di San Michele was demolished and thus the title with the altar was moved to Chiesa di San Leonardo (Church
of St. Leonard). The school of millers had its religious seat in this Church, this school got to paint
a beautiful triptych by Cima da Conegliano’s studio. |

The most interesting works are: |
|
- the canvas
portraying St. Michele by Ludovico Teoput, called "il Pozzoserrato", it comes from the homonymous suppressed
church. |
|
- the ancona on main altar represents the Patron Saint with the saints Giacomo and Marta, made always
by Pozzoserrato. |

The Chiesa di San Leonardo today |
|
- On the left, at the back, there is the fine painting by
Cima da Conegliano’s studio, it represents St. Erasmo with other saints (triptych of Madonna with her
child and the saints Bartolomeo and Prosdocimo) made in 16th century.
- On the ceiling there is the fresco
representing Gloria di San Leonardo by G.B. Canal (18th cen.).
- Bas-relief by Giovanni Marchiori (18th century).
In the first decades of 20th-century, in Piazza San Leonardo (St. Leonard’s square), in front of the Church, the weekly market took place and the square
was crossed by tram. In that period there wasn’t yet the characteristic fountain we may see toady in front
of Palazzo Spineda, which is the seat of Fondazione Cassamarca. |
