THE UNIVERSITY OF TREVISO - Riviera
Santa Margherita |
|
The first news, concerning the establishment of
a Faculty in Treviso, went back to 1231 according to the history; the town was looking for a doctor who
could open a medicine school in that year. The canon Florio de’ Dovari from Cremona was appointed
jurisprudence professor in 1269. |

A doctor, employed by the Municipality thanks to his
capacity, was giving lessons to students in 1284; the doctor had to live within the Walls and the Podestà couldn’t
dismiss the doctor from his office. |

As for the law studies it is a known fact that there was
at least a highly considered jurisprudence professor already in 1309, his name was Giambellino da Parabiago.
The Municipality exerted itself to give jurisprudence, humanities and medicine teachers to Treviso, the same
thing happened in other medieval towns. From 1313 and to 1314 Treviso concentrated its efforts
to build a small university by the help of a canon law professor, hired as full professor, another one hired as
temporary teacher and the third had to teach canon law and the fourth one medicine. |

In 1724 the earl Ramboldo degli Azzoni Avogadro tried his utmost so that the
Accademia dei Solleciti (Solleciti Academy) was born in Treviso also thanks to archbishop Augusto Sacco’s help. |

|
This Institute was replaced by the Accademia Agraria
(Agricultural Academy) around 1770; this was desired by Venice, Maritime Republic at the time, which wished to
improve the economy and to better bovine breeding in Veneto. This institution was financed by Serenissima till
1797, when the town was taken by French army. |

|
In 1807 a club, made up by humanities lovers, was born in Treviso,
its name was "Gabinetto di lettura". The Accademia Agraria (Agricultural Academy) joined the University after
three years. |
|
The seat of University in Treviso is placed today in the same
building where there was the Ospedale di Santa Maria dei Battuti (main hospital in the centre of the town)
long ago. According to the history the brotherhood of "Battuti", helping the poor persons and the
occasional wayfarers, took over the area in the first half of 14th century where there is the university today.
A hospital was set up in that place: it was the one which worked in Treviso till the beginning of 20th century.
This structure was divested itself in these last years and thus the complex of the hospital, lost its historic
purpose, was bought and restored by Fondazione Cassamarca which turned it into an university. |
|
The courses of Jurisprudence, of Foreign Trade, of Statistics
and Computer Science for Enterprises Management take place in the several seats of University in Treviso today. |
